Fuller Challenge, Call for Paper, Competition, Design Competition, Social Impact, Make a Difference, Break the Barriers

I have always been fascinated by design, science, nature and system, when I came across this CHALLENGE based on comprehensive systems approach with innovation that can lead to wide-scale social and environmental impact, I couldn’t resist myself in taking the step forward and forwarding the IDEA.

I felt this initiative is truly…

“Breaking the Barriers & Making a Difference”

According to Michael Ben Eli, Buckminster Fuller’s concept of Design Science has come to mean different things to different people, evolving in the process into a potent combination of method, metaphor and myth.

Buckminster Fuller was a 20th century inventor and visionary who did not limit himself to one field but worked as a comprehensive anticipatory design scientist to solve global problems. Fuller’s ideas and work continue to influence new generations of designers, architects, scientists and artists working to create a sustainable planet.

The programs at the institution combines unique insights into global trends and local needs with a comprehensive approach to design. This challenge encourages participants to conceive and apply transformative strategies based on a crucial synthesis of whole systems thinking, nature’s fundamental principles, and an ethically driven worldview.

By facilitating convergence across the disciplines of art, science, design and technology, the work at the institution extends the profoundly relevant legacy of R. Buckminster Fuller. It strives to catalyze the collective intelligence needed to comprehensively address the unprecedented challenges before mankind.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

“Socially-Responsible Design’s Highest Award”

The Buckminster Fuller Institute invites scientists, entrepreneurs, planners, designers, architects, activists, artists, and students from all over the world to submit their innovative solutions to some of humanity’s most pressing problems. A $100,000 prize is awarded to support the development and implementation of one outstanding strategy.

THE INSPIRATION

Buckminster Fuller led a prolific life of research, invention, writing and teaching. He developed a comprehensive systems approach to understanding complex global problems. By rigorously adhering to his unique set of “design science” principles, Fuller’s work embodies a deeply attuned ecological aesthetic. Fuller conceived and prototyped new strategies intended to enable all of humanity to live lives characterized by freedom, comfort and dignity without negatively impacting the earth’s ecosystems or regenerative ability. He emphasized that the technology and know-how already exist to successfully surmount our global challenges and advocated “doing more with less” by increasing the overall performance of every resource invested in a system.

Fuller issued an urgent call for a creative revolution to “make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation, without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone.”

Answering this call is what the Fuller Challenge is all about…

THE GRAND PRIZE

Each year, it is awarded to support the ongoing development and implementation of one outstanding design solution. The winning individual or team is celebrated at a Conferring Ceremony in New York City and, along with a check for $100,000, receives the prestigious OmniOculi award sculpture created for The Fuller Challenge by artist Tom Shannon.
